Bringing an African aesthetic to kids fashion
A few years ago I got the opportunity to travel to Kenya and I loved it. Talking to the locals, I fell in love with the energy of the place, the pride Kenyans have for being African. The other aspect I noticed about our Kenyan brothers and sisters is how they showcased and celebrated their African heritage with the clothes that they wear. And that got me thinking.
Fast forward a few years later and while walking through the kids section of a mall in Cape Town I realised that all our retail clothing choices for kids, here in South Africa, are inspired by European ideas of fashion, colour and construction (Think of brands like Truworths, Woolworths, Cotton On Kids, Edgars, Keedo, Earthchild, etc). And so our kids were totally missing out on all the gorgeous African textiles that we have available. These iconic fabrics are so vivid and colourful, and yet they only get to be enjoyed on special family occasions and Heritage Day. And I wondered, how proud, how connected our kids would feel if they could express and enjoy their African heritage more in their everyday life?
